Logo and Artwork Repair

Professional printers are notoriously stubborn people. If you've ever dealt with them, trying to get a project printed, you've probably had them reject some artwork for one reason or another. Your logo is the most common source of the trouble.

The digital artwork for a logo can be one of two types of file. The most common type is a Raster image. This means it is made up of row upon row of dots of color, that form the image. The more dots of color you can pack into the same image, the more information you have, which results in a better quality image. However, you have to get it right the first time, because you cannot increase the quality of a Raster image once it has been created. You cannot increase it's size or resolution. This most commonly causes problems with your logo, when you decide to grab a copy of your logo off of your website, for a print project. Web-based images need very little information to look good, so they have a limited number of dots. But a print image requires at least 4 to 5 times as much information to look good. And as we said, you cannot add that information later and get good results.

The other format of image, which also happens to be your best solution to logo troubles, is called an EPS file. Instead of using lots of little dots to draw colors, it simply outlines broad areas of color. It is much easier to work with an entire area of color, rather than each individual dot that would make up that area. And because they're made up of flexible outlines, they can be stretched or compressed to any size, with no loss in quality. You're also able to define single, specific colors to a part of your logo; something not easily done with a raster image. Unfortunatly, there is no way to just save a Raster file as a usable EPS.
